Thank You, Rain

I'd just like to give a little shout out to the rain. We've missed it here in the Sacramento area for most of the winter. This recent storm (if you want to call it that) has made our garden look so much greener and we're pretty stoked about it.

Here we have parsley coming back from last year:

Some mint, also making a comeback:

And some arugula we just planted from seed:

I love watching it push right through the soil.

I'm not sure if the arugula will do well in pots. Any seasoned gardeners out there know if this is a good idea? I guess we'll know soon enough, huh?

We're also in the process of giving our backyard a make-over, by the way, and getting rid of all the grass tops the list.

Yes. ALL of it. Grass is one of the most useless plants! You mow it, water it, it grows and then you mow it again. Ridiculous!

Don't worry, the dogs will have plenty of soft ground cover to lay on. Ground cover plants are amazing (we're getting a TON of ideas from this site). Many of the options are non-flowering, human-friendly, pet-friendly, use less water and don't grow taller than a few inches. Can you say low-maintenance? That's my kind of plant!

In addition, we're opting mostly for potted plants and trees that produce food. We have one of the best climates for it, so why not? It certainly doesn't hurt that my husband works in environmental sciences and comes from a farming family. He knows his stuff, so that's working in our favor.
